He Lived Long, And He Prospered

Actor Leonard Nimoy, best known for his portrayal of "Mr. SPOCK" on Star Trek, passed away yesterday at age 83.
He appeared as an extra in numerous television shows and movies, and portrayed a wide array of characters.
An accomplished stage, tv and screen actor, he had a distinctive voice and was an excellent singer and narrator. He was the host and narrator of tv's "In Search Of", a show pertaining to unsolved mysteries and the supernatural.

He was also notable for his work on "Mission: Impossible", and most recently the sci-fi series "FRINGE".

All I'm Sayin' Is....

Original opening to "Wild, Wild West"
Updated Opening
I KNOW everyone had their fill of horrible, campy 90's 'big screen' theatrical re-makes of vintage television shows (Beverly Hillbillies, My Favorite Martian, The Brady Bunch, etc.), and some were better than others.
One of the most appalling was the forgettable Will Smith/Kevin Kline version of "Wild, Wild West". In all seriousness, I think it would be a good idea to try again to get it right, if not only to wash that terrible movie memory far away.

As I was watching a rerun of the 2009 JJ Abrams  "Star Trek" remake on FX, it occurred to me that two of the stars would be perfect for a well-written, modern attempt to update one of my favorite shows from my childhood.
The onscreen chemistry of Christopher Pine and Karl Urban (who is fantastic in everything he does) would translate well to these macho, handsome and savvy government secret agents.
To illustrate my point, I have created a few graphics to show how easy it would be for these guys to capture the feel and intent of the ground-breaking 1960's television show.

Robert Conrad and Ross Martin
Chris Pine and Karl Urban
I'm just saying that I think these two seem to work well together, and that with the strides in special effects and improvements over 90's hack scriptwriting, that a legitimate attempt to bring an exciting, swashbuckling, wild-west espionage shoot-em-up to the big screen is long overdue.
An homage, as it were, to when the days when tv was good. Or didn't have "CSI" or "SVU" or whatever in the title of every show.

STAR TREK, PERRY MASON, GUNSMOKE Composer Fred Steiner Dies (1923-2011)

Published at: Jun 27, 2011 4:31:12 PM CDT

(From Ain't It Cool News)

ScoreKeeper here with news of the passing of Fred Steiner. There are different degrees of celebrity. Most film and television composers, while not known personally or perhaps even by name, are very well known by their work. This can be said of the prolific and talented Fred Steiner. If you read Ain't It Cool News chances are high that his music has touched your life in some way.

As one of the most prolific television composers in the business, Steiner is most regarded for his theme for PERRY MASON (1962-1966) as well as his episodic scores for hit TV series' including GUNSMOKE (1960-1965), RAWHIDE (1961-1964), ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE (1961-1964), and HOGAN'S HEROES (1965-1966),

As many shows as Steiner was attached to, the twenty-five episodes of STAR TREK (1966-1967) he composed and conducted music for, earn him his star on the Geek Walk of Fame.

On behalf of Ain't It Cool News I'd like to extend condelences to the Steiner family. May his music live forever!
