Happy Halloween!

Here is a Halloween comic I rendered and sent to Dan Povenmire a couple of years back, while Phineas and Ferb was still in development. I stuck with the 'Disney' theme, and inserted our heroes into the situation:
The premise is that the step-brothers are dressed as prominent Disney icons Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Both stay true to the look, and Ferb is a bit much for even Phineas to handle...!

The Evolution of PHINEAS FLYNN

As a fan of the Disney hit animated show "Phineas & Ferb", and having a curious mind, I couldn't help but wonder just HOW Dan Povenmire was inspired to create the 'look' of Phineas. I know the legend of the "Restaurant-Butcher Paper-Epiphany" (you can read the account on Wikipedia 'Phineas & Ferb' entry), but how did he do it? What were his inspirations?

Let's start at the beginning: As a child of the 60's and 70's, I'm sure you will realize that Mr. Povenmire watched a lot of cartoons. Since he is MY age, 45-ish, his early childhood animation viewing was probably limited to Saturday mornings and the occasional classic Disney short on Sunday night's "Wonderful World of Disney".
Add to that the occasional early-morning or afternoon runs of the Tex Avery classics and the endless Warner Brothers 'Looney Toons' & 'Merry Melodies'. The annual eagerly-anticipated Christmas specials. The trips up to TG&Y or the local drugstore to read comics. Could he possibly have been influenced by the numerous pointy heads in the many manic shorts watched over the years? Most likely.
You will note that the early Woody Woodpecker started with a long, pointed head as noted in the above drawing. He was clever. Feisty. His beak was long, straight and rigid. He was invincible. He later evolved into the cutesy, rounded character we see today.
Heckle and Jeckle were two magpies of questionable gender, with heads (including beaks) that resembled footballs or fat ears of corn. They, too were clever and invincible.

"MAD Magazine" featured a long-running gag comic called "Spy vs. Spy", in which two secret-agent types engaged in a symphony of booby traps and explosions while each was trying to eliminate the other. Sometimes subtle, sometimes frantic. Always ending in a good come-uppance or explosion, they were also -say it with me- clever and invincible.
Like Phineas.

This, of course, brings me to my next question: WHO is Phineas Flynn's REAL father? Could he be the offspring of one of the 'SPIES'...?
I know this is a bit far-fetched, but stay with me: He's inventive. He's wiley. He ALWAYS escapes injury. He ALWAYS manages to elude discovery. His pet platypus, Perry, IS A SPY!
Coincidence...?

MORE Phineas and Ferb 'Phintasia' Drawings

As stated earlier, I am posting gif.'s of parody drawings featuring Phineas & Ferb characters in a take-off of Disney's FANTASIA. Below is an image of Jeremy and Candace as centaurs from the 'Pastoral Scene'.

ENJOY!
"Phineas & Ferb" were created by Jeff Marsh and Dan Povenmire and are copyright Disney.

More PHINEAS & FERB Fun! "PHINTASIA" GIFs!

Here is the first of a few 'solo' images of character designs from "PHINTASIA", my PHINEAS and FERB parody:

This one features Phineas as the 'Sorcerer's Apprentice', and Ferb as one of the enchanted water-toting broomsticks. (Personally, I think these would make great trading-pin designs!)
Phineas and Ferb were created by Dan Povenmire and Jeff 'Swampy' Marsh, and are (c)Disney.

More tomorrow.
Enjoy!

"Ferby" Character P & F Parody

Remember the popular line of toys that came out about 10 years ago that were like pets? They were called "Furbies" and were all the rage. This is an obvious parody that I can't believe hasn't been done yet:

Phineas & Ferb Parody

Below is yet ANOTHER Phineas and Ferb knock-off that I drew and sent to Dan Povenmire while the show he co-created with Jeff "Swampy" Marsh was in development.
I was told that many of these can be seen on the studio's office walls....
In this instance, our heroes are rendered as militant Islamic extremists. Note Perry as a wild-eyed scimitar-weilding assassin.....!

More Phineas & Ferb Parody Cartoons

This is a drarring I did and sent to Dan Povenmire while Phineas & Ferb was in development at Disney. I inadvertently omitted co-creator Jeff 'Swampy' Marsh from the credits.
Apologies.

In this pic, I rendered Phineas & Ferb in an 'old school' style and placed the stepbrothers in the cabin from "Steamboat Willie".

How Long....?

Just how long DOES it take a back injury to heal....? The doctor told me about three months, if I followed his advice and limited my activity to breathing and pissing. And he told me not to pick up 'anything heavier than a pencil'....!
I've really tried hard. I will do something normal, like cut the grass or lift up one of the twins. It is hard not to pick them up when they are standing under you with their hands up...! Then, I pay for it the next day with excruciating pain, immobility and non-productivity.
Maybe the nice physician knows what he's talking about. Ouch.

ANYway, here, as promised, is another of the drawings sent to Dan Povenmire featuring one of the characters of Disney's "Phineas & Ferb". This one has Phineas in a cross-over parody with Frank Miller's "Sin City". Some of you may not get it.

PHINEAS & FERB Nominated for EMMY!

From Animation Magazine:
Phineas and Ferb Creators Talk About Emmy Nom!

Thursday, July 16, 2009By: Ramin Zahed
Since Disney’s popular Phineas and Ferb series was nominated for an Emmy in the Special Class category (for the episode titled “The Monster Of Phineas-N-Ferbenstein”) we contacted the show’s creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh to hear what they had to say about the good news.
“We’re thrilled and feel like we’re back in grade school,” says Povenmire, who was also nominated last year for Best Title Theme and Best Music and Lyrics. “It really helps that the Academy created this Special Class category for animated half-hour shows that have two 11-minute episodes. It used to be that the Emmys would always go to shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy and just one slot saved for shows made for kids. But this year, it’s great because we share the category with SpongeBob SquarePants.”

While I Wait..... (Medicated Inspiration)

Well, I am still on the disabled list and unable to walk normally, much less work. As the doctor told me "Not to lift anything heavier than a pencil", my activities are limited. Begin physical therapy on back & hip Monday.
While I wait for another Mardi Gras theme, I couldn't resist some silly cartoons and wordplay:

First, an homage to Povenmire & Marsh.....

...And a nod to Frank Miller....

Rare "Phineas & Ferb" Original Drawing

I recently had a request from a friend whose daughter is a fan of the Disney Channel hit "Phineas & Ferb". The creators, my friend DAN POVENMIRE and his partner JEFF "SWAMPY" MARSH were gracious enough to provide THIS gem:

Much coolness abounds....!

Talented Artist Really DOES Need "PAYING" Gig!

WELL, after months of delays and hesitancy, I took a regular job. At a retail auto parts chain store. I had vowed to "never work retail" again, but had to take the job because I can't make any decent regular money as an artist. Everyone either wants a 'donation' or doesn't want to pay what the work is worth. Since I am pretty fast, most folks presume it should be pretty cheap.
Well, they can kiss my ass. People who say "Well, it shouldn't cost that much, since it didn't take you that long to do it...." have NO idea just how difficult getting a likeness can actually be! (Just for shits and giggles, YOU try it sometime, Michelangelo!)
Listen up, morons. You're not paying for the short time it takes me to draw your picture, portrait, or caricature. You're paying for the 30+ years of experience to be able to get a likeness in such a short time!
And I can't make as much money at any kind of print shop or in any low-rung graphics position to make it worth my while, so in lieu of chasing people down for pennies, I have taken a position in a field I despise in order to make a living. I don't necessarily enjoy dealing with slack-jawed droolers, trying to avoid arguing with them over what type of car they have, or what part they mistakenly requested. (I meant the part that attachesTO this one.....!) I had forgotten what a joy it is to install a battery in someone's car who is perfectly physically able, but just lazy or ignorant. But it's a regular paycheck. It enables me to help meet my financial obligations and takes stress off of my lovely and patient wife. And it will allow me the small allotment of time to chip away at the details of a project proposal I am attempting to complete.

Please pray for me that I don't blow my brains out before I can finish my cartoon designs.
Thank you and ROLL TIDE.
